There has been confusion about how to diagnose and manage concussion which delays treatment. Specialists reviewed over 5000 studies to create strict criteria for a list of prevalent indicators.
- Observed and documented disorientation or confusion immediately after the event;
- Impaired balance within 1 day after injury;
- Slower reaction time within 2 days after injury; and
- Impaired verbal learning and memory within 2 days after injury.
"Dr. Ghajar, one of the specialists, pointed out that the Brain Trauma Foundation is well known for its guidelines on severe brain injury or coma. We now estimate that they are being used by 80% of hospitals. The authors avoid using the term "mild traumatic brain injury" to describe concussion, Dr. Ghajar explains: "'Mild' is a disservice. I don't think any traumatic brain injury can be described as mild. It's like saying someone has mild cancer. Also, in many cases we don't know if someone with concussion actually has a brain injury. So we prefer to use the term 'concussion'."
