Alcohol takes more of a toll on the liver than previously thought.

A pretty commonly known fact is that alcohol is not good for your liver. Every college student has joked about how much their liver will hate them after a night out, but it is far from a joke. Excessive use can do some pretty serious damage to the liver cells and cause alcoholic fatty liver disease.

If you have fatty liver disease you can experience poor appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, muscle weakness and even mental symptoms such as confusion or brain fog.

New studies have found that not only is alcohol damaging healthy liver cells, but there is an entirely new reason that alcohol is harming your liver.

Alcohol destroys your gut microbiome by depleting natural antibiotics in your gut. This means your liver is  left susceptible to bacterial growth on the liver. Gut bacteria migrates to the liver which promotes the chance of alcoholic liver diseases.

Alcohol use causes an unnatural colonization of bacteria on the liver and this colonization causes liver disease. Chronic alcohol use is also associated with lowered intestinal levels of naturally occurring antimicrobials, specifically in REG3G. A deficiency in REG3G promotes the progression of alcoholic liver disease and the abnormal migration of bacteria from the gut to liver.

This new knowledge will pave the way for new treatment approaches in which the focus will be placed on re-colonizing the gut bacteria into it's rightful place within the gut microbiome.

We know that good health starts in the gut. A disruption in your gut can lead to poor overall health, trouble losing weight and mental health issues.
