Is your IBD managing you or are you managing it? IBD treatment may be hazardous to your health. Even fatal.

Immune-suppressing drugs such as those used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been linked to higher rates of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC)

The researchers behind the correlation suggest that all patients with IBD comply with skin cancer prevention guidelines.

Studies have also linked IBD to higher rates of NMSC even before the age of 50, possibly as the result of immune system dysfunction and exposure to immunomodulators, especially thiopurines. The risk of tumor necrosis factor–alpha (TNF-alpha) inhibitors, the study says, is less clear.

The study says the “relatively high” standardized incident ratios are worrisome amid more use of dual immunomodulators and higher IBD rates in kids and younger adults.

You can talk to your doctor about the possibility of IBD and be tested for it. Or, you can head to Second Nature Care CT. Here Dr. G starts with the gut.
