Do you know which mineral is effective for preventing diarrhea in children?
This is why I developed GOOD GUT products for people with autoimmune diseases. Chronic disease begins in your gut. Your genes and gut bacteria contribute to the creation of autoimmune conditions. Gut health is the key to your overall health.
Researchers are finding that atrial fibrillation and subsequent strokes related to the arrhythmia are on the rise as the population ages. Between 2003 to 2010 there were 3.2 million hospitalizations due to acute cerebrovascular accidents and 22% were related to atrial fib. The number of atrial-fibrillation-related strokes rose from 70,953 in 2003 to 100,276 in 2010 up to 25.3 % in women and 19.4% in men. We need more education about stroke prevention.
I have been asked many times over the years from pregnant women, "Can I detox now, is there anything I can do or take to protect my baby from environmental toxins?"
My answer is to focus on stabilization so the toxins do not mobilize in the bloodstream. We stabilize with nutrients, minerals and low dose anti-oxidants.
Proton pump inhibitors were prescribed to decrease the risk and development of esophageal cancers. A nationwide study in Denmark of almost 10,000 patients newly diagnosed with Barrett's esophageal showed that no cancer-protective effects from the proton pump inhibitors were found. Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors was associated with a significantly increased risk of adenocarcinoma and high grade dysplasias.
Are we swimming in the wrong direction by taking fish oils? Dr. Peter D'Adamo posted an interesting review about fish oils in his Generative Medicine group on Facebook. It caught my eye because I believe in good scientific discourse, skepticism and careful analysis of all kinds of medicine whether it is naturopathic or allopathic. The review clearly stated that "there could be no possible expectation of general patient benefit with prophylactic fish oil use."
What's the bottom line on being fat? Can we be healthy and fat? We need fat for brain function, to manufacture our sex hormones and to lose weight. I used to think that some of my overweight patients were healthy. They had great energy and showed no metabolic syndrome disease. We would joke that they were keeping some of their energy in reserves. Now that "fat and healthy" thinking is coming into question.
A coronary artery calcium score study revealed that metabolically healthy obese people have a higher prevalence of coronary calcification compared to metabolically healthy people with normal weight. A large meta-analysis showed an increased risk for death and cardiovascular events in metabolically healthy obese adults compared to normal-weight counterparts. Is healthy fat a myth?
This is an actual photograph of Chongqing, China, where the smog is horrendous. The Chinese are making a huge exodus from the polluted cities, travel agents now sell air pollution travel insurance and everyone wears a mask.
We are all, no matter where we live, exposed to daily pollution through construction sites, car exhaust, gas stations, industries, quarries and even school chalk dust that releases sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone.
We all want good working hips throughout our lifetime. A recent study found that older men (age 65 and up) who had higher uric acid levels were 62% more likely to fracture a hip. High uric acid levels were associated with higher rate of hip fractures in older men and not women.
Higher levels of serum uric acid had a protective bone effect in postmenopausal women. Women with low uric acid levels had a 40% increased risk for osteoporosis.
