Stem Cells to Patch up Dental Injuries?

Hang on to your baby teeth!

Your teeth can not repair themselves naturally. When a child injures a permanent tooth at a young age they are pretty much stuck with it for life unless going the route of fake teeth or veneers. A new clinical trial has found promising results using dental stem cells derived from the patient's baby teeth to restore damaged teeth.

The study built upon previous work that studied human deciduous pulp stem cells, with may be able to replenish "pulp" the soft innermost tissue of a tooth.  40 children who has injured one of their permanent incisors were involved in the trial with 30 being treated with the stem cells and 10 undergoing the current standard procedure for this injury. The researchers found that by a year later the kids who received the stem cell had regained some sensation ,whereas; those who had undergone the current standard treatment had not.

"This treatment gives patients sensation back in their teeth," says Songtao Shi, co-lead author of the study. "If you give them a warm or cold stimulation, they can feel it; they have living teeth again. So far we have follow-up data for two, two and a half, even three years, and have shown it's a safe and effective therapy." (Irving, 2018)
Further followups found that the patients had even healthier root development, increased blood flow and thicker dentin.

In the case of one participant, the treated tooth was re-injured and had to have it extracted which allowed the researchers to examine it more closely.  They found that the stem cells had regenerated cells that produce dentin, connective tissue and blood vessels within the tooth.

Stem Cells are making huge strides in the medical community and are becoming accepted treatments for a number of thing.  They can be used to replace neurons damaged by spinal cord injury, stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other neurological problems. Stem cells are used to produce insulin for patients with diabetes and heart muscle cells that could repair damage after a heart attack and help treat MS patients.
