Here are some ways to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals that are causing your body burden.Free yourself this summer from the heavy toll that toxic exposures are taking on your body.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP's)are toxins that include flame retardants, chlorinated pesticides and toxic metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury. One type of POP is plychlorinated biphenyl. Polychlorinated biphenyls are fat soluble toxins associated with supressed immune function, reduced IQ, altered thyroid and reproduction function, increased risk of cardiovascular disease and liver disease as well as diabetes. That is alot! They can be found in soil, air and water. It is now found that over 50% of people tested for glyphosate in urine are showing up positive. This herbicide has permeated our food supply and is a known carcinogen. This is one of the associated links behind the Hashimoto's and autoimmune epidemic. It is still on the shelf of every big box store in this country.

Seafood

PCB's are found in farmed salmon. They have a half life in the blood of 10-15 years. Mercury can be found in tuna fish and can bioaccumulate in your tissues with a half life ranging from 10- 50 years. By lowering, or eliminating consumption of farmed fish and high mercury content fish you can reduce your exposures to some pretty heavy duty chemicals. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has an online guide that identifies fish with high toxin risk versus harvested options. Support EWG's efforts to keep you safe. www.ewg.org

Food/Cookware

Non-stick pans and utensils contain polytetraflouroethylene, a toxin that is linked to reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, hepatoxicity. Switching to stainless steel or glass cookware can help avoid this. Also, look into using a high quality air filter. Water can be one of the greatest sources of arsenic exposure, by using a water filter that removes arsenic you can greatly decrease your exposure. Eating organic can quickly and dramatically reduce the pesticide exposure. "Dirty Dozen" is a helpful, free app that lets you know which produce is high in pesticides.

Personal Care Items

Since we are getting ready for summer, be careful as sunscreen contains benzophenone-3, try finding a sunblock that contains zinc oxide instead. It works great and is non-toxic. Parabens that are used in multiple personal hygeine products such as hair products, deodorants, moisturizers etc. act as estrogen antagonists and can damage DNA.  They have been found in 99% of breast tissue samples and can stimulate proliferation of breast cancer cells.  Phthalates are also found in these products but mostly in fragrances in perfumes, detergents and shampoos. They impact estrogen activity, male fertility, elevated levels in autism spectrum disorders and endometriosis.

By educating yourself and staying aware of the toxins found in food and household products. This years spring cleaning can consist of getting rid of everything that is adding to YOUR body burden. It's never to late to make a BIG change. Try switching to organic food, you and your family with feel better in about 7-10 days. Part with your old non-stick pans, and be choosy with your beauty products! Start with your sunblock, the Honest company sells a spray on zinc oxide based sunscreen.

New Comprehensive Testing Available.  This is the year to find your total body burden.

The list of symptoms you could be feeling is endless. They could be caused by your environment and toxins that you did not even know you were ingesting. Stop suffering, come see Dr. G at Second Nature Care where you can be tested for heavy metal and nonmetal toxins that could be making you sick.
