Bulletproof Coffee - Hip or Hype? Second Nature Care Nutrition

Is David Asprey's Bulletproof Coffee Hip or Hype? The debate continues, but it pays to look at the research.

There is always a new food fad and they all sound good. You have to separate hip from hype and know your individual biochemistry. Food sands are always shifting due to political lobbyists, research and those who want to make food history. Compelling arguments can create more confusion.

Bulletproof Coffee has taken off in the corporate world. It is organic coffee with the addition of medium-chain triglycerides as in coconut oil and grass-fed cow butter.

Does this affect lipoproteins? I think we all agree that cholesterol is not the "bad guy" and eating some saturated fats is not necessarily harmful. Trans-fats and altered synthetic fats are a definite no.

Case reports of healthy and fit males who adopted Bulletproof coffee into their diets did see higher cholesterol levels, slight reductions in triglycerides and modest increases in HDL cholesterol. When you eat large amounts of butter most people haved increased atherogenic cholesterol lipoproteins.

Olive oil still wins over butter. Maybe you should eat a tablespoon of olive oil and chase it with a cup of black coffee. Sounds like a better bet for most people especially those with strong family history of cardiovascular disease.

It may pay to get some baseline cardio labs before you plunk a stick of butter into your coffee. I can run specific cardio labs and refer to cardiologists when appropriate. If you decide to drink Bulletproof coffee then come back in two months and let's rerun the labs.

Not all fats are created equal, but get a handle on your biochemistry before you get swept away with the next food fad.
