 Metformin use for diabetes.

A recent study found that the use of metformin in patients with diabetes and moderate chronic kidney or liver disease, or heart failure is linked to improved outcomes. Glyburide belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylureas and metformin is in a class of drugs called biguanides. Glyburide lowers blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin (a natural substance that is needed to break down sugar in the body) and helping the body use insulin efficiently. The study found that metformin led to a reduction in all-cause mortality in patients with CKD, CHF, or CLD with hepatic impairment. It also caused fewer heart failure readmissions in patients with CKD or CHF.

Metformin has a positive impact on the gut flora in diabetic patients. Metformin increases the types of short-chain fatty acids - butyric and propionic acid. In turn, these fatty acids reduce blood glucose levels.

Metformin does increase bloating and gas in many individuals but, this may be due to having a higher level of coliform bacteria in the intestines.

Not all drugs are bad. Metformin has an added benefit of reducing the risk of breast cancer. I will still recommend Xymogen's CinnDromX, OptiFiber Lean and diet changes, but I certainly feel comfortable prescribing Metformin as another tool to reduce blood sugar when diet and exercise are not enough or when patients are resistant to making healthy lifestyle changes.
