President Juan Manuel Santos of Columbia said that he is ending the use of the herbicide glyphosate to erradicate coca plants. Instead, he will be using the caterpillars and a special breed of moth that eats the plant.
Motivated by the recent World Health Organization classification of glyphosate as a carcinogen, Santos is choosing a natural and safe method to protect human health of Columbians.
I applaud his decision. You can imagine that he received some backlash from The European Union's Glyphosate Task Force who said, "glyphosate poses no unacceptable risk to humans, animals or the environment." Monsanto's chief technonology expert, Robb Fraley, called the carcinogen report "agenda-driven bias." BTW - Fraley was outraged by the report.
How much glyphosate is used in the US? In 2012, we used more than 280 million pounds of glyphosate. This represented an increase from 110 million pounds from 2002. It's still well-stocked at Home Depot, Lowe's and other big-box stores.
The aerial spraying was initiated in part because guerilla fighters, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia or FARC, were protecting coca crops and on the ground measures were imposibble. FARC is demanding that the aerial spraying be stopped as part of their peace deal of the 50 year old war.
