Children's Allergies

A closer look at handling your child's allergies. A new study has discovered that elimination of food that triggers atopic dermatitis or eczema in children is associated with increased risk of developing immediate reactions to that food.

Eczema is an expression of an altered immune function and skin barrier breakdown.  60% of eczema cases begin in the first year of life. Atopic dermatitis is a red itchy rash that can have thickened dry skin and abrasions from scratching.  Atopic dermatitis usually begins on the scalp with 'cradle cap" in infants, on the face or cheeks, behind the ears, back of the neck, in skin folds and on the extensor surfaces of the arms and legs. Eczema can begin anywhere.

In other words, by completely removing a food that causes a topical reaction could lead to more serious reaction such as life-threatening anaphylaxis.  The study suggests that children who are diagnosed with food-triggered atopic dermatitis should be prepared to respond to a full blown reaction such as an epi-pen.

Of the total participants who had no previous history of immediate reactions, 19% developed food allergies after being placed on the elimination diet. About one third of these reactions were immediate, such as anaphylaxis. This is seen in up to 30% of patients, typically children under 5.

Most research will be conducted to determine whether small amounts of allergen food should remain in the child's diet to decrease the risk of developing an immediate reaction. Children's families should work to understand their child's allergies and what the best approach to handling them is.

ALCAT and ELISA/ACT testing in CT. !!! Some insurance plans cover the test.  Once allergens are diagnosed, we create an emergency treatment plan for acute episodes after accidental exposures.  If an infant presents with food allergy symptoms during exclusive breastfeeding then mom has to follow a maternal elimination diet and correct her underlying dysbiosis of her intestinal microbiome.  I remove her allergens and have her take GOOD GUT Probiotics + immune and GOOD GUT Repair.  I recommend Xymogen's HistDao for added protection and a specialized probiotics for infants from Klaire Labs that you can order from Emerson Ecologics through our virtual pharmacy.  Probiotics modulate the immune system and help to prevent allergic conditions like atopic dermatitis.
