Coffee May Prevent Liver Disease

Liver cancer is the third leading cause of death in the world. Each year 600,000 new cases are diagnosed with a survival rate of 3-5%. Drinking coffee reduces the risk of liver cancer in those with elevated risk. Coffee, not tea, was shown to reduce liver cancer risk in studies from Japan, Finland and Singapore.

In one study, patients with elevated GGT enzymes and low coffee consumption had a 9-fold increase in liver cancer risk.  Coffee was protective whether it was boiled or filtered.  We check baseline liver enzymes and GGT with Second Nature patients. We have successfully managed and treated patients with Hepatitis C and other liver diseases.

It seems that drinking the bean has a positive effect in preventing fibrosis in alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Coffee improves liver function tests: GGT, ALT and it prevents the development of fibrosis in chronic hepatic inflammatory disorders. Individuals with chronic Hepatitis C infection and drank coffee were able to maintain normal aminotransferase levels (liver enzyme), reduced elevated aminotransferase levels and had reduced inflammation with no change in fibrosis. These results were not seen with other caffeinated drinks.

One trial with Hepatitis-C participants showed those who consumed 3 or more cups of daily coffee compared to non-coffee drinkers had less progressive liver disease and the risk of cirrohosis was reduced.

Not everyone likes their cup of Joe so I recommend Xymogen's MedCapsDPO or LipoTropiX or Liver Protect.

Here are my coffee tips for the day

  • Buy fair trade organic coffee.  Store it in the freezer until you are ready to grind it fresh.
  • Hold the cream and sugar.  Sugar spoils the innate bitter taste that makes coffee coffee.  I do froth up unsweetened coconut or almond milk to a feverish pitch before I attempt to create abstract designs by pouring the steamed milk into the coffee base.  This will test and improve your eye to hand coordination.
  • Share your cup of Joe with someone special as you drink to better liver health.
