Dealing with IBD - Make your Gut Healthy

Hope in finding a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease.

Everyone needs to get their belly healthy. Let's make our tummies look as good on the inside as those abs do on the outside.

A commonality in many of our blogs is the assertion that your body's health stems from the health of your intestinal microbiome. Studies are coming out with new natural ways to help our body regulate our gut.

By restricting amino acids in the diets of mice, intestinal inflammation can be lessened.

There is a connection between cellular mechanisms to sense nutrient availability and control of inflammation. A low protein diet, or drugs that mimic the effects on immune cells could be used in the treatment of IBDs including Crohn's or ulcerative colitis.

The effect is due to a molecule called GCN2 which is a sensor for amino acid starvation in cells. GCN2 is important in the induction of immunity to the yellow fever vaccine.

Mice lacking in GCN2 are more sensitive to a chemical irritant that is used in model colitis even if fed a low protein diet. The mice given the low-protein diet in the presence of GNC2 were protected from the signs of colitis.

This demonstrates the necessity of GNC2 for the protective effect. GCN2 also controls the responses of Th17 immune cells.

Patients with IBS also need to be wary that it could possibly be IBD. You can talk to your doctor about the possibility of IBD and be tested for it. Or, you can head to Second Nature Care.
