Dieting Away Depression

Your diet could be making you depressed.

A diet known as the DASH diet, developed to lower blood pressure without medication, is based on limiting sodium intake and eating lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy.  It was even ranked one of the healthiest diets overall.

Results from a research study conducted at Rush Medical center has found that people following the DASH diet to reduce risk of hypertension also displayed lower rates of depression. Other diets such as the Mediterranean diet and a conventional Western diet were also followed. The researchers found that the group on the DASH diet had the lowest rates of depression and were also the least likely to develop depression.

While the study was purely observational and therefore does not directly confirm that the diet actively reduces depression, it does make clear that there is cause for question and further research. The question being does diet really effect depression?

Of course, you know the answer. GOOD FOOD GOOD MOOD. Diet directly affects how we feel.

Well this question was investigated by a following study. Researchers from Deakin University split their group of participants into a diet group and a support program proven helpful for people with depression. They found a third of the subjects undergoing dietary intervention had identified as entering remission while only 8% of the support group subjects reported that.

Our gut bacteria plays a prominent role in our neurochemistry. Gut bacteria has been linked to PTSD and Alzheimer's disease and a small study has shown probiotics can reduce symptoms of depression.  Even though it yet to be determined if diet truly causes depression, health benefits of consuming a healthy diet are undeniable. But there is still plenty to be uncovered about our diet, our gut and our mental health.

Whether an unhealthy diet actively causes depression is still yet to be determined, but the overall health benefits of a better diet are not in doubt and there is a lot to still be uncovered about the connections between our diet, gut and mental health.
