Sarcopenia and alcohol consumption.

Sarcopenia is the natural process of muscle tissue loss during aging in woman. It has been associated with alcohol consumption among women in the years following menopause according to a new study.

In a fully adjusted model, postmenopausal women who consumed the highest levels of alcohol had over four-fold increased odds of developing sarcopenia compared to those who drank the least. There is an adverse link between postmenopausal health and consumption of alcohol. This study suggests that postmenopausal women limit their alcohol intake to improve health as they age.

"Postmenopausal have lower estrogen levels due to menopause. Heavy use of alcohol in this group of women led to more muscle wasting, less strength and poorer physical performance. Exercise, and possibly postmenopausal estrogen, may play a beneficial role in maintaining muscle mass," JoAnn V. Pinkerton, MD, executive director of The North American Menopause Society, told MedPage Today in an interview."

Researchers in the study found the associated risk to be higher among postmenopausal women with other adverse health outcomes or lifestyle behaviors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking.

Second Nature Care understands all aspects of menopause from osteoporosis to vaginal dryness. Second Nature patients with osteoporosis remove inflammatory foods that cause bone demineralization. Of course, Second Nature patients take GOOD GUT products to recolonize, repair and restore gut function because you need healthy microbial diversity in your intestines to produce healthy bone tissue. For postmenopausal women vaginal health is equally as important. Post-menopausal women  suffering estrogen deficiencies may experience genitourinary syndrome, vaginal atrophy or dryness. The Mona Lisa Touch Laser works to counteract the effects of menopause on the vagina. It is an excellent option for women with a history of breast cancer, thrombophlebitis or other contraindications to estrogen therapy, inadequate response to estrogen therapies or for those who experience a decline of treatment results with estrogen or women who desire to return to premenopausal vaginal health.

Dr. Enzenbacher at Piermont Gynecology offers hormone-free MonaLisa Touch laser. Contact her at 845 680-6600 to schedule your pre-procedure consult.
