Black children are 30% less likely to be diagnosed with an ear infection (otitis media) than non-black children. If they are diagnosed with an ear infection they get a narrow-spectrum antibiotic as recommended by pediatric guidelines.
White children are diagnosed more often with ear infections and they receive broad-spectrum antibiotics which does not follow current guidelines. Most of these children receive inappropriate broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Ear infections in children aged 14 and younger create an average of 6.4 million visits per year. 2.3 million visits out of the 6.4 million are by black children so the percentage of visits for black children was 7% lower than for non-black children.
For 1000 children that led to a diagnosis of ear infection - 89 per 1000 were for black children vs 143 for non-black children. Broad-spectrum antibiotics were less likely to be prescribed (42% less) for black children.
