It has long been recognized that gastrointestinal disorders and skin disorders go hand in hand.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) has been an underlying problem of about 84% of patients diagnosed with IBS. SIBO is a co morbid and contributory factor in several common skin conditions, such as rosacea, acne, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, psoriasis, and systemic sclerosis.

Rosacea is triggered by a variety of factors, such as low hydrochloric acid, diet and GI disorders. SIBO treatment has been shown in previous studies to also treat rosacea. Patients with rosacea often have significantly higher SIBO prevalence than non-rosacea patients and in the majority of these patients eradication of SIBO can significantly reduce rosacea.

The role of the intestinal microbiome, as well as oral probiotics, to mediate systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, glycemic control, tissue lipid content and even mood have important implications in acne. Acne patients have a higher risk for GI distress. Studies have shown that acne patients are more likely to experience halitosis, gastric reflux, bloating, and constipation. SIBO is strongly associated with depression and anxiety. The eradication of SIBO improves emotional symptoms and in turn relieves emotional and non emotional aspects of acne. The lines of communication, as mediated by gut microbes, may be direct and indirect and ultimately influence the degree of acne via a systemic effect on inflammation, oxidative stress, glycemic control, tissue lipid levels, pathogenic bacteria, and levels of neuropeptides and mood- regulating neurotransmitters. There is more than enough evidence to suggest the GI's contributing factors in acne.

Deficiency in Omega-3 fatty acid has been shown to increase SIBO and also has been linked to depressive symptoms.

Most people with SIBO have BAD BREATH.  We offer the SIBO test. We test for hydrogen and methane.

Increased levels of hydrogen sulfide create more ROS or reactive oxygen species which limits the amount of energy produced in the mitochondria and that results in tissue damage and finally, cell death.

Researchers know that hydrogen sulfide is involved in long-term chronic gut inflammation which leaves cells without oxygen and energy.  Hydrogen sulfide, present in gut nerves, in humans, is a unique gut-signaling molecule that increases neuronal electrical activity and mucosal secretion.

Second Nature patients follow the GOOD GUT protocol and use Xymogen's VegaPro protein mix with zero carbs and add in OptiFiber SCFA to increase short chain fatty acids.
