What About the Fluoride in Your Water?

Water running from a tap into a kitchen sink-1Fluoride is leaching out of granite and into the drinking water in Maine.

Where is this fluoride coming from? It's coming from granite in New England geology. Granite contains high levels of fluoride and when it breaks down the run off can find its way into a private well. There are documented granite into private well problems in New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Fluoride is not captured by counter-top filters; only by reverse osmosis systems which can be pricey.Did you know that excess fluoride damages bones and brains?

There are several communities in the "Switzerland of Maine" that have contaminated tap water. Private wells dot the landscape and are used to provide drinking, bathing and cooking water. Ten communities in the state have wells that show dangerously high levels of fluoride.

Fluoride in high levels leads to pitted teeth and discoloration. It attacks bone tissue and makes bones brittle with higher risks of fractures.  I had a patient who was exposed to industrial fluoride who later developed multiple myeloma.

New research is showing that fluoride reduces children's I.Q's by an average of seven points.
Maine may rival China with fluoride levels in some private wells. Data from 37 wells shows that 37.8 percent of the water is above the state's fluoride maximum exposure guidelines.

There is a suggested limit of two milligrams of fluoride per liter, but public health advocates want that reduced to 0.7 milligrams per liter to prevent health problems.

Residents in Central Maine had well water contaminated with high levels of arsenic.  Arsenic is tasteless, odorless and is linked to mitochondrial muscle diseases, lung, skin and gastrointestinal cancers, blindness and numbness in the hands and feet.  Several years ago, I had an arsenic poisoning case with an older couple from Pennsylvania.  They had arsenic levels in tissue storage above 1000 from agricultural run-off. The husband went to the Mayo Clinic seeking medical attention for his weird mitochondrial disease.  At that time, they didn't know to test him for heavy metal toxicity. They did a thorough work-up and took measurements of his lack of function, but he could barely walk until we started a rigorous chelation process to remove the arsenic.

Your drinking water is a serious business. We all deserve clean water free of harmful chemicals, heavy metals and radiation.  There are adverse effects at high levels and at milder levels that were once thought to be safe. Get your well water tested every year. Your health is worth it.
