Gout incidence is strongly linked to a patient's concentration of serum uric acid over time.

Gout is a form of arthritis that manifests in the joints causing pain, swelling and tenderness in the joint. It is an independent risk factor for cardiac events.

Gout can be due to an overproduction or under excretion of uric acid or it can be a secondary condition to another disease. Gout is usually associated with high levels of uric acid, but not all gout attacks are triggered by a specific level of uric acid. The trigger is when there are acute changes in the level of uric acid.  When too much uric acid crystallizes and deposits in the joints, this causes gout. Often times gout manifests itself in the big toe.

"The incidence of gout rose from about 1% after 15 years in patients with a serum uric acid (sUA) level of less than 6 mg/dL to almost 49% in those with 10 mg/dL or higher in the study, which implies “a long period of hyperuricemia preceding the onset of clinical gout” and also “supports a role for additional factors in the pathogenesis of gout,” Nicola Dalbeth, MD, said in her presentation of the results at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology."

What is the treatment for gout?  Treatments can address acute flares, preventing flares and reducing the level of excess uric acid.
