New genetic testing called Mammaprint discovers that almost half of the women who are treated with chemotherapy for breast cancer do not need to be.
The MammaPrint tests looks at over 70 genes to determine whether or not chemo therapy would have an effect on the tumor returning. The new testing has reduced prescriptions by 46% .
With the testing in place, it can drastically reduce the number of breast cancer patients that are receiving unnecessary treatment.
"After surgery to remove their tumors, early-stage breast cancer patients (0-3 positive nodes) with a MammaPrint score recommending against chemotherapy had a 95% survival rate, said co-researcher Laura van ‘t Veer, the test’s inventor."
