Headache disorders linked to hypothyroidism

Headache disorders may be linked to an increased risk for new onset hypothyroidism, according to a longitudinal retrospective cohort study involving more than 8,400 individuals.

Participants received physical examinations and thyroid function testing every 3 years over 20 years. Headache disorder was determined via self-report, use of headache medication, or physician diagnosis. Investigators looked for new onset hypothyroidism. Among the results, headache was seen in one fourth of patients, 7% had new onset hypothyroidism and those with headache disorders were 21% more likely to develop new onset hypothyroidism.
