Help for Mood Disorders

Young women with a nervous breakdownWhere are your dopamine levels? High, low or just right? Your brain goes out of sync with the rest of you when dopamine levels are elevated.

I check most patients for dopamine levels with salivary and blood baseline labs. If someone has a mood disorder dopamine, cortisol, serotonin and other neurotransmitters are on the list.

When dopamine goes high one can experience aberrant arousal patterns.  Dopamine is run by an oscillator that drives your rhythms of behavioral arousal. When the body is in sync, your biological rhythms in the heart and elsewhere work together. But when you are in a period of aberrant behavioral arousal, the body goes into lengthened periods of activity and can't stop.

Researchers studied genetically modified mice.  They disrupted their dopamine transporter gene which increased extracellular dopamine levels. The mice would normally have 4 hours of activity, but this alteration increased activity span beyond 48 hours.

Think Breaking Bad with methamphetamine. When animals were given methamphetamine normal 4 hour periods of activity lasted up to 100 hours or longer. Talk about invincible. That is probably why methamphetamine is so dangerous and a hard habit to break.

The pharmaceutical, haloperidol, blocks dopamine receptors in the brain, lowers dopamine levels and shortens activity levels.

Dopamine Dysregulation
Another group that suffers with ultra-rapid cycling or high dopamine levels are individuals with bipolar disorder.  They can swing into manic episodes every second day. Schizophrenics may have oscillator imbalance too as they exhibit rest-activity cycle aberrations.
