Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a disease that affects the nerves. MS breaks down the myelin which is what wraps around the nerves to protect them, Unprotected nerves can no longer function properly without healthy myelin. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, mobility issues and slurred speech. Two to three times more women are diagnosed with MS then men. It is estimated that over 2.3 million people live with MS worldwide.

Take this quiz to test your knowledge of MS and treatment options!

 1. True or False. Relapsing-remitting and chronic progressive forms of MS are usually responsive to immunomodulatory therapy.

  • A. True
  • B. False

2. Which of the following corticosteroids can play a role in the treatment of MS?

  • A. Methylprednisolone
  • B. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
  • C. A and B
  • D. None of the above

3. True or False. The existence of subclinical MS lesions should play a role in deciding to treat the disease, as patients are more likely to experience cognitive decline and neurologic deficits over time if progression is not slowed down by early treatment.

  • A.True
  • B.False

4. I.V. Ozone is a proven therapy for MS

  • A.True
  • B.False

5. Subcutaneous interferon-beta given every second day for up to 5 years has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of relapses in MS by almost ____________.

  • A. One third
  • B. Half
  • C. Two-thirds

6. A double blind, placebo controlled trial of patients with relapsing remitting MS has shown that treatment with monoclonal antibodies has what type of effect(s)?

  • A .Reduction in Relapses
  • B. Reduction in new or enlarging T2 cerebral lesions
  • C. No effect on gadolinium-enhancing lesions on MRI
  • D. A and B
  • E. All of the above

 Answer Key:

1. (B. False)- Relapsing-remitting MS that is accompanied by episodic inflammation is usually responsive to immunomodulatory therapy, but chronic progressive MS may be unresponsive to this form of treatment, according to the 10th edition of Adams and Victor’s Principles of Neurology

2. (A. Methylpredniolone) - Intravenous methylprednisolone has been shown effective in reducing disability and the degree of brain atrophy in patients with MS, but ACTH administration has been abandoned as a therapy.

3. (A. True) - The existence of subclinical MS lesions should play a role in deciding to treat the disease as patients are more likely to experience cognitive decline and neurologic deficits over time if progression is not slowed down by early treatment.

4. (A. True) - I.V. Ozone alone or in conjunction with other treatments gives great results.

5. (A. One Third) - Subcutaneous of interferon-beta given every second day for up to 5 years has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of relapses in MS by almost one third.

6. (D. A and B) A double blind, placebo controlled trial has shown that treatment with monoclonal antibodies results in a 68% reduction in relapses, 80% reduction in new or enlarging T2 cerebral lesions, and a 96% reduction in gadolinium-enhancing lesions on MRI.
