There's always a lot of media buzz about the ALS ice bucket challenge and thousands of selfie videos.

I'd like to bring your attention to the ice bucket challenge which has been a part of Naturopathic Medicine for thousands of years.ND's are fully trained in hydrotherapy and its principles. It is the use of hot and cold water to stimulate the immune system by driving blood circulation from the periphery to the vital organs and back out to the periphery. This activates your basic innate immune system. It brings in vital nutrients to localized areas to fight infection, stimulates white blood cells and removes cellular waste.  Naturopathic physicians are taught constitutional hydrotherapy which involves hot and cold wet sheets and electric stimulation to treat chronic diseases.

I have treated ALS patients and found that there is a pattern with specific viral loads, exposure to pesticides, elevated lead and other metals and genetics.  Alterations in the intestinal microbiome require immediate and radical dietary changes. I have found that alcoholism was a challenge to address in my patients with ALS. Detoxing patients with ALS has been challenging and maybe it's because of their genomics or compliance issues. It is a ravaging degenerative disease that demands full-time detoxing.

Naturopathic Hydrotherapy Tips

I would encourage everyone to stimulate their immune system with an infra-red sauna session following by a cold shower. I tell patients to finish their warming shower with 10 seconds of cold to close their skin pores. You'll feel great.

You can get up by sunrise and ground yourself by taking a dew walk. A dew walk is walking barefoot on the grass for 15 minutes to stimulate your adrenals and thyroid gland. You can also wrap a cold cloth around your neck to stimulate your thyroid directly. It's great for hypothyroidism or low thyroid.

Second Nature adults and children love the magic socks treatment. When you feel a cold coming on or you just don't have your usual mojo, take thin cotton socks and put them under running water. Wring them out and place them in the freezer for two minutes. Make sure your feet are warm and place the cold wet socks on your dry feet. Cover the wet socks with thick wool socks and go directly to bed.  During the night the magic socks work on your immune system. You will wake up with dry socks and feel like a million bucks.

The ice bucket challenge is simply Naturopathic hydrotherapy treatment in action.  If you did it and it felt good then continue to practice hydrotherapy for a healthier you. Your local library and Amazon have several books on hydrotherapy. Click to Connect with Dr. G
