Hey everyone! It's Winter again. What's going on with your IBS diagnosis?

This blog topic hits home for me. Since childhood I've undergone countless tests only to be given a constant false diagnosis of IBS. After years of cat scans, blood tests, endoscopies and hospital visits I was never told I could have Celiac or a gluten allergy. Low and behold, I stop eating gluten and my stomach has been fine since. If you there is something wrong with your body before you spend time and money on all the tests-  start by changing your diet.

IBS (also know as irritable bowel syndrome ) is a go-to diagnosis when, basically the doctors don't know what is wrong exactly. IBS is characterized a "functional" bowel disorder, without any detectable structural abnormalities or pathology. New evidence has been found to show that IBS has shared pathophysiologic mechanisms shared with inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. IBD is a heterogenious group of disorders featuring various forms of the mucosal and/or transmural intestinal inflammation.

Before the discovery of the relation of IBS to IBD, IBS was merely an exclusion diagnosis. It is now appreciated as having an inflammatory component that activates the immune system, albeit with milder intensity. With more research one can hope for an accurate medical diagnosis instead of a guess.

It is no longer useful to think of IBS as a "functional" disease. It has become clear that it could even lead to IBD on sort of an IBS to IBD and back to IBS continuum due to the remission of IBD resembling IBS. There are also suggestions of IBS being directly related to the Nervous System.

What is causing these disorders in the first place?

Your gut microbiome! Disturbances in the gut microbiome are the center of the link between IBD and IBS.  It is also possible that SIBO could be playing a major role in your health and going undiagnosed. Make sure you are tested for SIBO because it could be causing your IBS. The only way to treat something is to get to the root of the cause.

Dr. Guggenheim tests for SIBO and this test is allowed in NYS.
