Killing MRSA

Killing MRSA

Research is trying to stop MRSA dead in it's tracks.Staphylococcus aureus, better know as the staff infection (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) might have met their match. And no, it is not those cute little hand sanitizers we clip on our bags (although they don't hurt).

The infection is hard to treat and often antibiotic resistant and often shows itself as sores or boils, but can also infect the bloodstream, lungs or urinary tract but researchers may have found the way to kill of the bacteria. MRSA and MSSA contaminate just about everything they touch. The bacteria makes itself right at home on most surfaces especially ones that are frequently trafficked like hospitals, schools, other public buildings, and public transportation.

This increases the risk of health care-associated infections caused by MRSA and MSSA. It can be spread by a single touch of a finger tip on a contaminated surface. The bacteria can be left by the touch of a person carrying it or bodily fluids, and then picked up by the next person's touch ultimately continuing its spread to other surfaces and potentially leading to thousands of infections. Researchers studied the life of the MRSA and MSSA bacteria, discovering that the cells remain alive for very long periods of time on non-antimicrobial surfaces.

Stainless steel is one of these surfaces, which shows how many places this bacteria can harvest itself for extended periods of time.Copper, unlike stainless steel, actually kills the bacteria. If the bacteria is exposed to copper, the bacterial respiration and DNA of the cell become damaged. This causes an irreversible cell break down, leading to the death of the cell. This study found that bacteria die on copper surfaces due to an attack from the copper ions and oxygen species found in copper. Maybe we should be making our bathtubs and bathroom fixtures out of copper.

I recommend that you go buy real copper kitchenware and keep a copper pipe around to wipe your hands on. I am envisioning a copper pad that you could swipe your hands on instead of those toxic sanitizers.
