Mast Cell Activation Disorders - A Modern Epidemic

Mast cell are involved in inflammatory autoimmune conditions. We address mast cell disorders at Second Nature Care.

You may recognize mast cells from allergic reactions. When you have an allergic reaction you can get flushed, you might sport a rash, your throat might itch, and your sinuses might swell with congestion caused by mast cells releasing histamine, but mast cells have a different involvement in neuroinflammatory autoimmune diseases. Learn about the differences.

Mast cells are first formed in your bone marrow. Mast cells are necessary for allergic reactions. They are part of our alarm system. Now, mast cells are implicated in several inflammatory diseases - Multiple sclerosis, migraines, inflammatory arthritis, atopic dermatitis, cardiac inflammation, interstitial cystitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

The spectrum of diseases that are related to mast cell activation disorders are on the rise.

I see patients with very different clinical presentations; those who are hypersensitive to foods, chemicals, air and even water. I first rule out other co-infections like Lyme because Lyme can migrate in the body and affect every organ system with sometimes bizarre presentations: blister-like lesions, granulomas around teeth, odd bruising, thickened blood, spleen pain, migratory pain and anaphylactic reactions at the drop of a hat.

Acute stress activates sensory nuclei on mast cells which then release inflammatory chemical messengers which leads to increased blood-brain barrier permeability.

We have leaky gut, leaky bladder, leaky vagina and leaky brain. The blood brain barrier protects our brain from toxins.  When the blood brain barrier is breached this is the genesis of pathologies and clinical symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological disorders.  We have one patient who had an epidural injury which caused a leak into her cerebral spinal fluid, then she acquired Lyme and then she was diagnosed with MS. She is going to Panama for stem-cell therapy in two weeks to hopefully reverse her condition. She choose our office to receive I.V. Ozone MAH treatments with specialized homeopathic medicines to stimulate her mesenchymal cells.

Mast cell activation disorders are involved in meningeal inflammation and migraines. Skin mast cells are close to sensory nerve endings and when activated can cause atopic dermatitis, eczema, acne vulgaris and psoriasis. Mast cells are involved in inflammatory arthritis, asthma, unstable angina and silent myocardial ischemia.  Cardiac mast cells are part of the development of atherosclerosis, coronary inflammation and cardiac ischemia (less blood flow to the heart).

Interstitial cystitis is another neuroinflammatory condition.  It typically affects women and presents with urinary frequency, urgency, night time urination and pelvic pain. Many women have concurrent endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain. More than 50% have skin, systemic allergies and irritable bowel syndrome. We rebuild your immune system and reduce inflammation with direct ozone treatments in the bladder.

In the gut, mast cells are right next to local intestinal nerve endings. Again, acute stress leads to gastrointestinal mast cell activation that leads to increased intestinal permeability or leaky gut. In patients with IBS or interstitial cystitis mast cells are pronounced.

There are certain supplements that are effective to inhibit mast cell activation. We use I.V. ozone, anti-inflammatory diets and mast cell inhibitor nutraceuticals to target the mast cells involved in autoimmune conditions.
