Before you get sick you should know all of your options and stop just accepting a z-pack out of force of habit.Hey everyone, it's Winter.  Recently I wrote a blog about the harmful effects of antibiotic use over time. In the blog I also made light of my constant use of z-packs to kick any of the sinus or upper respiratory infections I might have.

For the past two weeks I have been fighting a pretty nasty battle with tonsillitis. For about a week I was confined to my room desperately trying to coat my throat in some max strength chloraseptic and eating nothing but ice cream (even soup hurt too bad). Besides the burning pain inside my throat my lymph nodes were so swollen my neck was sensitive to the slightest touch.

I managed to drag myself to the doctor three times that week assuming I must have some terrible illness or mono because I was in disbelief at how sick an infection in your tonsils can make you.

To combat this I was put on a 10 day dose of azithromycin and some pain killer. The antibiotics may or may not have helped, but they definitely made me foggy and sick to my stomach.

With new studies coming out stating the dangers of antibiotic use on brain function, that "foggy" feeling is concerning.

My throat looked horrendous. The pictures I took of my throat would put any Google image search to shame. After ten days of antibiotics I saw no improvement and my throat still looked as horrifying as ever.

When I told Dr. G, she gave me a few bottles of drops to kick my strep. In all honesty, my throat cleared up within a couple of days. She even had one to help my swollen lymph nodes that were making me twice as uncomfortable.

Flash forward a week later and my tonsils are inflamed again. When I suggested having the tonsils taken out to my doctor they looked at me like I was crazy. (I've had strep three times since August). Instead, I was just offered another ten day z-pack.

Z-packs and other antibiotics are handed out as if they offer no possible side effects. Why is something that we know causes health problems the first line of defense and distributed like candy at the first sneeze?

Before you get sick you should know all of your options and stop just accepting a z-pack out of force of habit.

Dr. Guggenheim offers drops that really pack a punch to inflamed tonsils and the infection causing them. Although my throat is still sore and I blindly accepted another ten day commitment to the azithromycen, the drops cleared up all of the white patches on my tonsils and throat.

To treat severe tonsillitis she uses safe effective I.V Ozone treatment. If you aren't afraid of needles (I am), the injections will introduce oxygen directly into the cells of the tonsils. It is hard for an infection to flourish when the cells it wants to attack are being flooded with oxygen and becoming healthier.

Just because we are used to something does not make it better. Sometimes we need to stray from what we are comfortable with in order to be safer and healthier.
