A recent study presented at the 2016 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference found that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease seems to accelerate brain aging. The researchers conducting the study assayed the white-matter hyperintensities and brain volume through MRI. Although there were no significant associations with white-matter hyperintensities or hippocampal volume, there was a significant association found with total brain volume.
The findings also showed that patients with NAFLD had smaller brains than normal for their age, which could be seen as a pathological acceleration of the brain aging process. This showed about a seven year advance in the brain aging process for patients younger than 60. Diminishment in brain sizing for patients over 60 was about 2 years.
NAFLD is associated with obesity as well so maintaining healthy daily exercise habits are important.
