The test measures ratio of amyloid-beta 42 to amyloid-beta 40, in healthy individuals the ratio is consistent, but when beta-42 starts to stick to plaques in the brain it doesn't get out into the blood and the ratio drops. The test is being developed by C2N Diagnostics and they are working with the FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to commercialize the test.
This could be a game changer for Alzheimer's treatment and detection. Early detection would allow for early treatment. The test could be used to screen millions of patients who are at risk and begin treatment before any memory loss and brain damage occurs.
The Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation just contributed over 1 million dollars to Alzheimer's research.
