Osteoporosis and Asthma: What's the Connection?

You need essential nutrients, water and breath to optimize bone health. People with asthma are at increased risk for bone loss. In a Korean study of 7000 adults, individuals with asthma had significantly lower bone density in the lumbar spine. Both men and women with "airway hyper-responsiveness" were in normal range for total bone density, but - it is clear that asthma is a risk factor for bone loss.
Which came first - the asthma or the bone loss?  What is the connection?

Researchers are not sure about the link between asthma and bone loss. As an ND, I know about one link that I see with patients with asthma and osteoporosis. Elevated lead levels. As we age, our bones de-mineralize and the stored lead in bone tissue migrates into blood circulation where it can disrupt hormones, suppress the immune system, create neurological issues and cause increased asthma episodes.Typically, patients are prescribed corticosteroids and inhalers that are further linked to bone loss and fractures. A vicious cycle begins. Most modern practitioners are not educated about the underlying etiologies, alternative treatments or dietary measures for asthmatics that reduce the incidence of asthma and build bone health.

If you have asthma or you have decreased bone loss I encourage you to test in the blood and tissue storage for elevated lead.  At Second Nature, we have hundreds of cases where asthma and bone loss are linked through lead. Vitamin D and Vitamin K play a role in bone preservation. These levels are tested as part of diagnostics. Better to know your baseline levels and make corrections then to experience a terrifying breathing event or create unnecessary fractures.

Second Nature patients with asthma remove grains, dairy, sugar and any other identified food allergens from their diet. Sometimes that includes nuts, legumes and even some herbs. Inflammatory foods cause bone demineralization so they must be removed. They take DFH's Pulmonary Revive, L-Glutathione, Vitamin D Supreme with K, NAC and Vitamin C. Of course, Second Nature patients take GOOD GUT products to recolonize, repair and restore gut function. You need healthy microbial diversity to produce Vitamin K in your intestines.
