Breakthrough ALS theory. You may know ALS from internet takeover a couple years back with the "ice bucket challenge". ALS is much more as it affects about 20,000 Americans.
The disease causes the degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The disease is often fatal within a few years of development. There are two types of ALS one is "spontaneous" affecting 85%-90% of patients and then "familial" making up the remainder of ALS patients.
David Steenblock, a researcher for ALS has come up with a new theory that could change the entire game plan for ALS. His theory is on how the disease develops and how to slow progression. If his theory holds true it could lead to a major breakthrough in terms of how existing patients are treated.
Steenblock believes that there is an initial trauma to the neck that sparks the disease followed by degenerative joint disease within the neck. When another trauma effects the neck at the same point it can cause a break or "opening". This allows the blood stream to introduce new toxins into the opening by the damaged spinal cord thus causing the injury and death of motor neurons as seen in ALS. He says that it comes from a perfect storm of unfortunate events. The neck injury could come from any type of neck trauma from a sports collision to whiplash.
There is a 97% correlation between spinal nerve injury, reinjury and occurance of ALS.
It is now understood that there is some type if infection involved in the disease. Within the intestine a combination of yeast and bacteria forms into a biofilm. The yeast and bacteria along with other things such as retroviruses, prions, misfolded proteins damaged neurofilaments and other cell derived aggregates are causing the infection. By dissolving the aggregates as they occur in the cerebrospinal fluid offers a possibility of new treatment.
He believes that the disease stems strongly from toxins in the body such as heavy metals. The use of stem-cells could also be making it's way to the main line of treating ALS and other degenerative diseases such as MS.
He also stands firm that ALS is a "holistic disease" and that many of the triggers in ALS are caused by the gut. The gut could have an infection that is not being seen from the most common symptoms (diarrhea, constipation, pain, etc.) The yeast and bacteria are making themselves at home in the microbiome of the gut and festering.
The yeast then becomes protected by a biofilm that is nearly impossible for the white blood cells to combat on their own. Heavy metals such as mercury and lead play key roles as well.
