Patients experienced stabilized or improved Expanded Disability Status Scale scores. Patients improved in motor function, speech or bulbar functions, urinary function, and improved cerebellar functioning.
Although a group of patients saw no improvement, the therapeutic benefits of all the other patients in the study are enough to say that there are beneficial effects of the stem cells on the disease.
The patients were also followed for 6 years prior to the treatment, and no serious side effects were seen during this time. "Immunologic follow-up showed a transient up-regulation of regulatory T cells and down-regulation of the proliferative ability of lymphocytes and of several immune activation surface markers for up to three months"
