Leaky Gut

Time to take on Leaky Gut!

Intestinal Permeability (IP) is better known as "leaky gut".

In leaky gut, the small intestine becomes more permeable allowing the entry of large molecules and toxic material into the bloodstream that cause local and systemic inflammation. Bacteria, fungi, parasites, heavy metals, undigested proteins find their way through a damaged porous mucous membrane. These foreign substances get in the bloodstream signaling the immune system to become reactive and start creating antibodies against your own tissues. The body cannot begin to repair the inflammatory damage unless the permeable gut is healed.

Leaky gut is often associated with food allergies, food hypersensitivity and irritable bowel syndrome.  It is also associated with autoimmune, hepatic and metabolic conditions.   Removal of any potentially offensive agent is fundamental to healing impaired intestinal barriers.

A change in diet is not the only intervention necessary in the treatment of Leaky Gut.  Stress also has an effect on intestinal permeability.    Stress facilitates the impairment of gut barriers through the upregulation of corticotropic-releasing factor. This results in activity in the in the gastrointestinal tract.  Immune and neuroendocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract are also able to secrete CRF influencing motility and mucosal function.  (Maddux, 2022)

Leaky gut syndrome is directly associated with all autoimmune diseases: alopecia areata, autism, chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn's disease, allergies, IBS, MS, RA, Raynaud's, scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome, ulcerative colitis, diabetes, inflammatory arthritis and polymyalgia rheumatica to name a few. If you have any of these conditions you most likely have leaky gut.

Isn't it time to stop the leak? Call us and come in for testing and treatment. Reverse your chronic disease by treating your leaky gut.
