Restless leg syndrome and the gut.

Restless legs syndrome is a common disease and can be a debilitating condition. It's characterized by discomfort and the uncontrollable urge to move the legs which occurs mainly in the evening and significantly disrupts sleep. It is a common comorbidity of many neurological and systemic conditions including: iron deficiency anemia, Parkinson's, MS, fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy and kidney disease. Key players in the cause of RLS are iron deficiency, peripheral and central inflammation and damage to sensorimotor nerve pathways.

A commonality between patients with RLS is that they often suffer from digestive comorbidities like  IBS, IBD or Celiac. These digestive states tend to promote nutrient malabsorption and micro gut bleeds including that of iron which then leads to a decrease in iron storage and deficiency. In patients with IBS, SIBO is another potential trigger for restless leg syndrome. Patients with IBS are often affected by sleep disruptions which can worsen next day IBS symptoms. The sleep disturbances reported are often the main consequence of Restless Leg Syndrome.
