When you get inked you are introducing foreign pigments into your skin. You might be getting more than a pretty picture. There is a range of adverse effects - systemic toxicity or inflammatory immune responses to the pigments. You can also transmit infectious diseases or cause localized skin diseases within the tattoo.
Depending on the ink used reactions can be mild to very severe. Individuals with preexisting conditions like: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immunocompromised are the most vulnerable.
Allergic reactions to tattoo pigments are common. You can have a bullous blistering eczema, contact dermatitis or photoallergic dermatitis. Allergic sensitivity happens when the immune system is hypersensitized to the tattoo pigment after a previous exposure. Red pigments are the most common cause of this kind of reaction and they contain mercury. Why would you want to inject mercury into your system?
Even weeks after getting a colorful tattoo, you can get an ulcerative lesion from a Staph or Strep infection. Once the epidermal barrier is breached you can introduce and transmit tuberculosis, syphilis, leprosy, hepatitis and HIV - all reported from tattoos.
