Sleeping with Social Media

Unplug before bed. Are you falling asleep with your phone at your side? Looking at it, texting friends, or playing games til the moment you fall asleep? Many young adults are. Phone use before bed has already been deemed to be an unhealthy habit. Staring at the bright screen on the phone, inches away from your eyes before trying to sleep is not ideal.

This affects your natural biological rhythms which in turn affects heart rate, metabolism, fertility and much more.

But does it matter what you're doing on your cell phone before bed as well? A recent study says just that.

Researchers have found that scrolling through your social media platforms before bed is independently causing disturbed sleep in many young adults. The study assessed a sample of over 1,700 US young adults between the ages of 19-32. The participants self reported to what extent they were using social media in the 30 minutes before bed. Not only was the use of social media within the 30 minutes prior to falling asleep significantly associated with sleep disturbances but so was the frequency of checking social media before sleep.

Cell phone use before bed is not only unhealthy, but so is sleeping withing reach of our smartphone. Making a point to not use the cell phone before bed is important, especially in young adults and teens. Putting your phone in a separate room before bed is a great way to not only keep yourself off social media before bed but, to protect yourself.
