The Swiss Medical Board took a bold new step by phasing out existing mammography programs and stopping new screening programs.
The seven member board made this controversial recommendation when they realized that there were no obvious benefits of getting mammography versus the harms. It is important to question the validity of medical practices so that we can integrate and use the best standards of care for the consumer.
I believe the issue is complex and further complicated with financial corporate tie-ins from companies who make money from mammography screenings.The financial contamination dictates the recommendations and payments of a particular kind of screening at the expense of presenting "full options" to the consumer. I'm all for mammography in the right context, but it is only 33% specific in women who are premenopausal and don't have dense breast tissue; whereas, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is 93% percent specific.Thermography has a valid use to locate non-specific hot spots that can be further evaluated with additional imaging and biopsy.
Don't be neutral about breast cancer prevention. Be proactive.
