Renal colic due to kidney stones can cause patients a great deal of pain.

The pain does not come from the stone itself necessarily but, the obstruction of the urinary flow by the kidney stone causing increased pressure on the urinary tract wall which increases pressure on the urinary tract wall, smooth muscle spasms of the ureter, edema and inflammation near the stone and increased uretal peristalsis.

Patients are typically given an opiate prescription to ease the pain, however; the pain returns immediately after the drug wears off and causes lethargy and constipation and does little to actually treat the stone. Although they do ease the pain they are not renal antispasmodics and do nothing to improve urine flow or resolve obstruction.

In contrast to opiates, there are herbal medicines that can relax the spastic ureters and demulcent agents can help lubricate and soothe inflamed urinary mucosal tissues. Protocols should be implemented immediately, as the longer a renal calculus sits in the ureter the more edematous and swollen the ureter can become, contributing to the obstructive symptoms and the body's inability to dislodge the stone. These herbs may reduce uretal inflammation and spasm, prevent edematous swelling of the tissues and assist the natural ability of the ureter to move a stone alone toward the bladder.

Among the most powerful antispasmodics are Piper methysticum , Lobelia inflata, Viburnum opulus, Aesculus hippocastanum, Ammi visnaga, Dioscorea villosa, Gelsemium sempervirens, Atropa belladonna, and Hyoscyamus niger. Piper methysticum is powerful, works quickly and has an affinity for urinary smooth muscle. An alkaloid of Piper methysticum, kawain, is in part responsible for numbing sensations in oral and other mucous membranes and contributes to urinary anodyne effects.

We offer I.V. Ozone with German biologics and Ozone Chelation to improve kidney function and reduce the formation of stones.

Many Apiaceae plants may relax urinary smooth muscles by inhibiting calcium channel ions. These herbs are emphasized for renal pain, bronchospasm and hypertension due to their muscle-relaxing effects on urinary, respiratory and vascular muscle fibers.

Ammi visnaga is useful as well for relaxing spasms in the ureters. Use it in teas or tinctures or apply hot compresses to the back to facilitate the passing of a stone.

Kidney stones can be caused by a variety of reasons, very high levels of zinc, stress, inflammation, lack of exercise, obesity, and dehydration. The consumption of sugary drinks can also lead to stone development, especially in children. We have Naturopathic protocols to prevent the formation of kidney stones.
