Treating Morphea with Homeopathy.

Localized scleroderma, otherwise known as Morphea is a rare chronic inflammatory skin disease. It manifests as a disorder of cellular immunity, microcirculation and an abnormal increase in collagen synthesis.  Excessive collagen deposition causes sclerosis and fibrosis contributing to stiffness, movement disorders and limited mobility.

Current first-line treatments with the most evidence of efficacy include phototherapy, methotrexate, systemic corticosteroids, calcipotriene and topical tacrolimus however there is no consensus on treatment and most studies involve very few comparative or placebo controlled clinical trials. Management of Morphea remains very unsatisfactory and/or inconsistent and recurrence rates are high after discontinuation of treatment.

The treatments also pose other health risks. Long term use of corticosteroids is linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, increased infections and suppressed adrenal gland suppression. Chronic use of methotrexate can result in liver damage and side effects including nausea and vomiting, mouth ulcers and anemia.

In a case report of a 68 year old patient with Morphea the primary treatment used was an individualized homeopathic medicine, Rhus radicans, prescribed as a 200C potency.  The patient received a total of 3 dry doses of of 2 pellets per dose over a period of 6 months with approximately 6-7  weeks between doses. During this time, the patients Morphea improved continuously and the skin on the ankles displayed decreased sclerosis, cracking, dryness and discoloration. The skin also increased in mobility. (Bugg & Rennie, 2018)

This case report represents the effectiveness of the homeopathic remedy as the primary intervention for Morphea. Rhus radicans  was clinically shown to improve Morphea a rare skin condition that is historically hard to treat.  Homeopathic medicines ave a high safety profile, low risk of side effects and are cost effective constituting a viable alternative to the conventional treatment of Morphea. We incorporate prescriptive homeopathy remedies into our I.V. Ozone treatments.
