Sometimes the truth comes in waves. MedScape boldly published a study that found chemotherapy near death failed to improve quality of life for patients with cancer even if they were in good health.
The study revealed that "chemotherapy appears to contribute directly to worsen quality of life." It was surmised that chemo's toxic effects greatly impacted on the quality of life even in those who felt well initially.
This is causing a shake-up with The American Society of Clinical Oncologists who would push treatment to the bitter end. Their new guidelines will recommend that if an oncologist suspects death within the next 6 months then no treatment should be offered.
This brings up several ethical questions for both practitioners and patients. Pushing false hope or embracing the fact that chemotherapy does not extend life in late-stage disease.

We support their religious and spiritual beliefs.
When you get a diagnosis of cancer you find out what is important in your life. Disease means change.
Our current life model is centered around living short and dying long. I find that our patients with cancer make some necessary positive and radical changes in their lives. They begin to appreciate and live their lives more fully than before.
