A recent study discovered that elimination of food that triggers atopic dermatitis or eczema in children is associated with increased risk of developing immediate reactions to that food.

Of the total participants who had no previous history of immediate reactions, 19% developed food allergies after being placed on the elimination diet. About one third of these reactions were immediate, such as anaphylaxis. This is seen in up to 30% of patients, typically children under 5.
Most research will be conducted to determine whether small amounts of allergen food should remain in the child's diet to decrease the risk of developing an immediate reaction. Children's families should work to understand their child's allergies and what the best approach to handling them is.
