Unexpected colorectal cancer prevention?
Viagra has been tested for other uses including anti-obesity and jet lag, but now researchers are interested in whether or not the drug can protect against colorectal cancer.
Sildenafil, originally formulated for hypertension was found not to be effective as a heart disease treatment, by trial volunteers reported side effects of unexpected erections leading the FDA to approve the drug to treat erectile dysfunction. (Haridy, 2018)
A new study found that small daily doses of Viagra reduced the number of polyps in half in animal models predisposed to develop colorectal cancer. This interesting use adds a possible new role to the erectile dysfunction drug.
The idea is that increased levels of a chemical called cyclic GMP has been seen to suppress some intestinal cancers by reducing excessive cell proliferation in the gut.(Haridy, 2018) Viagra is known to inhibit an enzyme found in colon cells called PDE5. PDE5 breaks down cyclic GMP. Thus, viagra may indirectly help reduce the potential of abnormal mutations resulting in cancer causing polyps.
