What you Should Know About Bisphenol A

What is BPA?

First, what are endocrine disrupting chemicals?

They are mostly man-made and have been found in various materials including: pesticides, metals, additives, and contaminants in food and personal care products.

For starters, they interfere with the endocrine system in mammals. They have the known potential to cause cancerous tumors, birth defects and developmental disorders.

They have the ability to knock any bodily system controlled by hormones off track.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical with estrogen-like effects, is used in products such as baby bottles, water bottles, eyeglass lenses, medical equipment, toys, CDs/DVDs, cell phones, consumer electronics, household appliances, sports safety equipment, airplanes, and automobiles. Epoxy resins containing BPA are used as liners for most food and beverage cans, adhesives, industrial protective coatings, and automotive primers. BPA is also used to make dental sealants, flame retardants, and is an additive in many other widely used consumer products.

The human body can metabolize and excrete BPA relatively rapidly. Yet a recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that looked at urinary concentrations of BPA in over 2500 participants, indicated that 93% of U.S. residents have measurable amounts of BPA in their bodies. This suggests that human exposure is continuous and via multiple sources.

BPA has been linked to both type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Associations were revealed between Bisphenol A exposure and adverse perinatal, childhood and adult health outcomes in humans, including reproductive and developmental effects, metabolic disease and other health outcomes, particularly behavioral effects in children

BPA exposure may also be linked to the following health issues:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): BPA levels were observed to be 46% higher in women with PCOS compared to their healthy counterparts.
  • Premature delivery: Women with higher BPA levels during pregnancy were 91% more likely to deliver before 37 weeks.
  • Asthma: Higher prenatal exposure to BPA, especially at week 16, was linked to a 130% higher risk of wheezing in infants under 6 months. Early childhood exposure to BPA was also linked to wheezing in later childhood.
  • Liver function: Higher BPA levels were linked to a 29% higher risk of abnormal liver enzyme levels.
  • Immune function: BPA levels may be linked to worse immune function .
  • Thyroid function: Higher BPA levels were linked to abnormal levels of thyroid hormones, indicating impaired thyroid function.
  • Brain function: African green monkeys exposed to BPA levels judged safe by the EPA showed loss of connections between brain cells.

To minimize exposure the NIH offers these tips :

  • Don’t microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers. Polycarbonate is strong and durable, but over time it may break down from over use at high temperatures.
  • Plastic containers have recycle codes on the bottom. Some, but not all, plastics that are marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA.
  • Reduce your use of canned foods.
  • When possible, opt for glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers, particularly for hot food or liquids.
  • Use baby bottles that are BPA free.
  • Xymogen's XenoProtX, Colon Rx, NAC or S-Acetyl Glutathione, Drainage and Liver Protect
