Isn't it time that you upgraded your life?It is not just a New Year for you to make false promises or resolutions that go nowhere. It does not matter who you voted for or who won the election. Don't let politics or the news determine your state of mind. The news is depressing either way and it perpetuates a sense of hopelessness.Who knows what will happen with health care. Whether it is repealed, thrown out or a new plan emerges that does not fit with you or your budget (the insurance companies are the winners) - you need to make a committment to your health. That is tangible power that you can utilize to have a happier and healthier life.
It's time for you to wake up and take control of your health care reform. No one will do it for you. There is very little that you can control, but you can strive to empower yourself with better health habits one step at a time. It will not happen overnight and I do not have a magic wand to magically transform your life.
If you change; others around you will change too.
I have patients who moan about not being in a relationship or they complain about being in a current relationship. Listen up.
You are already in a long-term relationship with You. You don't need a bucket list of things to do before you die; you need to start living your life as if you are going to live a very long time. This is an important distinction. Don't live to die. Make your decisions based on what is the best plan for a healthy life.
If you are trying to cut carbs then don't hang out with your friends who guzzle beer and pub food grub (chicken wings, nachos and fried mozzarella sticks). Let's face it. It is not going to work. Do something different.
It's time to go back to basics. You cannot continue to eat a poor diet, lead a sedentary life, not get enough sleep or go against your gut intuition with drinking, smoking or substance abuse and expect to get healthy.
It starts with one change. My top list of self health care reform would look like this:
- Go to bed one hour earlier or at least by 11pm. Don't watch the news before sleep.
- Put all of your digital equipment in another room.
- Walk for 15 minutes shortly after rising in the am. Get a dog or pretend you have a dog.
- Don't skip your coffee, but insist on buying organic. Drink half your body weight of water in ounces. Drink 2 cups of green tea per day. Coffee, water and green tea help to change your metabolic rate. Drink nothing sweetened.
- Eat one salad per day with olive oil and lemon dressing.
- Do one purposeful activity each day that supports your good health
- Either say or do one nice thing to or for a stranger each day. You won't believe how this makes you feel. We are wired to be compassionate and supportive.

It's not about being perfect; it is about being consistent. Consistency with healthy patterns, like good parenting, is the most loving thing you can do for self.
