The first line of defense is called the innate immune system. It is nonspecific and works immediately. Those are physical barriers, skin, hair in your nose and mucous membranes that keep bad bugs from getting inside the body.

When we want long term resistance to a disease we activate our adaptive immune system. B cells, a type of white blood cell, in the adaptive immune system patrol and surveil the body for foreign invaders. These cells have surface antibodies that lock with the foreign invader pathogen and prevent it from entering your cells. Once bound to the antigen (foreign invader) then the B cells make copies of itself or ready antibodies to recognize that specific invader. You want a trained army at your immune disposal to fight the good fight.
For long term protection, we have T cells, three different kinds, that are formed after an infection to recognize this foreign invader in the future. These are T-memory cells. They recognize the invader if it comes again and another T-cell hunts the pathogen down and destroys infected host cells.
There is a double-edged coin with T-cell reactivity. It is speculated that is why some asymptomatic people can clear a virus because their immune system has created background knowledge or cellular wisdom. Others, who become seriously ill may be ill because their immune system is working overtime. The immune system kicks into high gear and creates a massive inflammatory cytokine storm. This creates casualties including lung, heart and kidney tissue damage.
