Origanum vulgare AKA Oregano is the hottest natural antibiotic as featured in the recent New York Times article about reducing antibiotic use in chicken feed. Bell and Evans’ chickens eat feed laced with oregano oil and cinnamon to effectively kill pathogens. Oregano contains several volatile oils. Carvacrol and thymol are responsible for reducing bacteria, viruses and fungal infections.
I use oregano in my winter chicken dishes, essential oregano oil mixed with thyme oil in a spray surface disinfectant and internally to fight infections. Used by the Ancient Greeks, oregano was used for an upset stomach and to fight upper respiratory infections.
In a previous blog I presented the recent medical findings about Amoxicillin not being effective for bronchitis. Oregano oil is sold in standardized gel caps, essential oils for external use only and oregano leaf tincture. Internal formulations are contraindicated in pregnancy.
Emerson Ecologics carries several versions of oregano. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Schedule your health consultation with your Naturopathic Doctor and learn about the medical benefits of oregano.
