Naturopathic Physicians are primary care providers who have attended an accredited 4 year graduate level naturopathic medical school. A naturopathic physician or ND is educated in all of the same basic sciences as an MD, but is an expert in natural medicine with an emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness. In addition to standard medical curriculum, ND’s are required to train in clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathy, botanical medicine, pharmacology, psychology, physical medicine, hydrotherapy, minor surgery, I.V. therapies, and lifestyle counseling. Practitioners are licensed and board-certified through rigorous national and state board examinations. Naturopathic physicians use a wide variety of natural therapies to create individual treatment protocols. The scope of practice differs in each state and ND’s are licensed to practice in 16 states in the United States.
The AANP (American Association of Naturopathic Physicians) represents licensed ND’s in the USA. To locate a naturopathic physician on the web, find more information about naturopathic medicine or receive updated licensing efforts, go to http://naturopathic.org .
