What are Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)?And what are they doing to your fertility?

"PAHs are a class of common persistent environmental pollutants found in water, air, soil and plants and can be released from natural sources. The majority of PAHs come from vehicular emissions, coal burning plants and production and use of petroleum-derived substances."

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been linked to caner and other diseases, and also reproductive disorders. These compounds can be inhaled, ingested through food and water or even absorbed through the skin or mucosal membranes. Literature discussing PAHs describe them as causing endocrine disrupting activity. Studies have shown that they have estrogen and androgen disrupting properties. Many studies have stated that PAHs can act directly as anti-estrogens and anti-androgens. Non-cancerous effects of PAH exposure in humans includes poor sperm quality and testicular function egg damage, DNA damage in oocytes (female eggs) and reproductive functions.

They are also released from tobacco smoke, the burning of biomass (e.g., forest fires, controlled burns), the cooking of certain foods, and other natural sources (e.g., volcanoes, erosion of sediments. Further, recent studies have detected PAHs near sites of unconventional oil and gas development (UOG) activity. UOG includes hydraulic fracturing, which is a method of injecting water, sand, and chemicals underground at high pressure to release oil and gas from various types of geological formations. (Bolden, 2017)

A scope of the literature yielded hundreds of studies discussing reproductive health disruption. "The studies in humans evaluated health outcomes such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, spontaneous abortion, and preterm birth. The animal studies evaluated endpoints such as egg production, oocyte development and maturation, embryo resorptions, and pup survival. Fertility, pregnancy, reproductive organ weight, and ovarian physiology were the most frequently evaluated endpoint categories in both animals and humans." (Bolden, 2017)

The scoping review indicated ample evidence that PAHs are effecting female fertility. To read the full review:
