Depression has a major impact on migraine.
It is no surprise that migraine and depression are linked because they are treated very similarly. Both are heavily effected disturbances in the intestinal microbiome. A new study finds that there is a significant correlation.
In patients with episodic migraine, depression was associated with increased risk. The severity of the depression also had an interaction with the severity of the migraine and the likelihood of it becoming chronic.
From mild to severe depression the odds of new-onset of migraine also occurred. The study that made the discovery also suggests that in patients with chronic migraines, depression should be searched for. It is hoped that treating the depression as a separate entity in these patients, the intensity and occurrence of migraine should lessen.
