They have done it again, Down Under.
Researchers in Australia have come up with a new hypothesis for the etiology of dementia, Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
They believe they are all caused by an immune response of the innate surveillance system. This is a cells “quality control” system for the purpose of detecting danger signals and responding in the appropriate manner, it provides immediate defense against pathogens and other invaders.. This leads to a cascade of inflammation, tissue damage and cell death.
There is also evidence to support this, that innate surveillance –mediated cell death is a common cause, not a result, of nerve cell death, therefore the causal mechanism of neurodegenerative disease. The researchers also are continuing to investigate the role of amyloid plaques and tau proteins in the brains of affected patients. These neurodegenerative disease are also increasingly found to be accompanied by the activation of the immune surveillance system that is typically associated with pathogen recognition and response.
Many genetic changes linked with these types of diseases can be demonstrated to specifically escalate this pathway. This research will help to identify new drug targets that can delay or halt the onset and progression of these disease and lead to new treatment options.
